Band of the week /// The Virginmarys

the virginmarysPast epochs in music still serve a great inspiration for musicians and music lovers of today. When these influences get reconciled with contemporary sounds of the best quality, then real rock ‘n’ roll of today as it should be gets born. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce The Virginmarys.

The Virginmarys mingle Nirvana-influenced grunge with wilderness of old-school punk music and perform this cocktail with flavour and skills typical of British bands only. Thus in a splendid fashion they take their listeners on an exciting journey full of fun and real rock ‘n’ roll. Real here, however, means not only the attitude of Ally, Danny and Matt to what they do, but also how they do it. The band are the most spectacular when they play live and that’s how The Virginmarys sound on their debut album ‘King Of Conflict’ (released in February 2013). The emotions are real and flow over the top, borderline with soaring honesty and hearts flung open. Passionate, soaring, husky vocals of Ally make an ideal match to riffs that are performed to make you dizzy and get caught in a hurricane of music with inventive and piercing hooks. The stories told by The Virginmarys are serious and intelligent ones, performed, however, with a great deal of fun. Rare quality to talk about serious things in a way that’s actually a lot of fun, isn’t it? In the light of all said above, it’s by no means a coincidence that The Virginmarys have already been featured on BBC breakfast show, scored iTunes’ Single Of The Week, sold out Garage in London and gained a lot of fans, including Slash and We Are Scientists.

The Virginmarys belong to this special breed of bands who are free from cliches and stagnant patterns of making music. Fired, genuine and electrified, their songs showcase the talent of the three musicians which must be recognised.

Many thanks to Eva @ Music Gets Me By for introducing The Virginmarys to me.
