Independent outlook /// Ravenous ‘We Are Become Death’ [Album] 2013

Ravenous

If you like thrash metal in its old-school, classical version, just like Metallica smashed it in the best years of their career, there’s an immense treat awaiting for you. Southampton band Ravenous have their album ‘We Are Become Death’ out and that’s exactly good, old thrash metal.

Laden with mighty riffs and tremendous rhythm section, ‘We Are Become Death’ demonstrates its more than serious intentions without pausing for a cup of tea. The opening of ‘Abhor’ smashes out of your loudspeakers uncompromisingly heavy, thunderous and technically masterful. Groovy melodies work like a huge metal hammer, pushing its way forward mercilessly, confidently and without looking back. There’s great power hidden in these melodies – the one that is capable of massive destructions of stereotypes and false beliefs that quality metal has become ancient history.

Another delicacy of ‘We Are Become Death’ is breathtaking guitar solos that grace every track. Skillful, technical performances of these solos makes them a real diamond and a music treat which will make you hold your breath and listen in awe. Try howling guitars of ‘Deathstiny’ or ‘The Architect’ and see for yourself how metal solos should be done.

To top it all, in their album Ravenous show a great variety of melodies and a rich vocal range. It’s not screaming, but harsh singing, and sounding classically old school the vocals of David Game tap into right territories: sharper or softer, he knows how to work with his voice. As far as the melodies are concerned, Ravenous offer more than just guitar shredding, but a variety of patterns – something that makes this listen interesting all the way and still fresh on repeated listens. Ripping it in ‘Reverse (Sympathy)’ or ‘Ravenous’ and then slowing down for ‘Easter Island (We Are Become Death)’ or ‘Alone’, Ravenous tread various territories of metal equally confidently.

Ravenous have a great talent for old school music and they do their job perfectly. ‘We Are Become Death’ is exceptionally heavy and not for faint-hearted, but if you dare play this album, you’ll be rewarded with the special pleasure of listening to quality music.
